Welsh composer Hillary Tann’s short overture “With the Heather and Small Birds” gives us a taste of being out in the “gorse” bushes of Wales. Following in stark contrast is Haydn’s tongue-in-cheek homage to patrons dozing at a concert – Symphony No. 94, “Surprise.” Witness the spectacular “Schwanendreher,” a concerto by Hindemith, showcasing the return of African-Japanese violist Nokuthula Ngwenyama. Finally, Ibert’s circus-like ballet music, “Divertissement,” brings the concert to an electrifying close.
