Colorado State University is one of more than 9,000 schools impacted by a cybersecurity attack on Canvas today. The hacker group Shinyhunters is taking responsibility for the attack. Initial reports of the scale of the cybersecurity attack came from The Chronicle. A message by the group directed at students and professors who use Canvas included warnings about their attack.
“Shinyhunters has breached Instructure (again),” read the message. “Instead of contacting us to resolve it, they ignored us and did some ‘security patches’.”
The message continued to ask schools that were interested in preventing data releases of private information to contact the group. They included a deadline of May 12 before threatening to leak all the data the group claims to have collected. Links and downloads included are advised to be avoided and not interacted with on any devices.
Canvas is now under maintenance as its team works to protect private data. CSU initially reported they were monitoring a potential attack on May 6, but no further updates from the university have been released at this time. Live updates from the university are also being listed on a university website.
