For February 4, 2025, KCSU’s news team brings you campus news coverage to start off. Audrey Donow covers the recent convening of the Associated Students of Colorado State University, who recently discussed the resources available to students regarding deportation. ASCSU used its platform to help provide information surrounding the recent increase in mass separation efforts and activity of the Department of Homeland Security. Many members of ASCSU spoke about the resources they provide. Other matters discussed were budgets surrounding the budget shortfall and its overall concerns. ASCSU President Nick Desalvo made several remarks on the budget situation as well as shared his plan to visit the state capitol to discuss the budget.
Finally, for ASCSU-related coverage, the Senate ratified 4508, which allocates an additional $54,000 to students for the next three academic years. In research at Colorado State University, researchers and scientists at CSU have been given a grant to continue their search for extraterrestrial life. The grant comes from NASA, helping researchers quest to find life beyond the stars. Finally, for campus news, water service issues have begun inside the Natural Resources building, staff and students were informed of the issue today with efforts to repair it beginning.
Moving to local news, Tyler Weatherwax delivers information about a Larimer County man who has been charged with shooting and killing cattle. The cattle were on the man’s property when and belonged to the nearby neighbors. The man’s defense claimed he did not see any tags or branding on the cattle and was startled. The judge could see his frustrations but denounced his response. In other Fort Collins news, a man has been arrested for child sexual abuse images after police received a tip. The police carried out a search warrant of the man’s home, where they found more than 3,700 images and videos of child sexual abuse images. Police also determined the man was in contact with at least two of the children. His bond has been set to $400,000.
Finally, in local news, two people were discovered dead in a Fort Collins drainage tunnel. Police received a call of two unresponsive people inside the tunnel. The two people were homeless and had been reached out to several times by the Homeless Outreach Proactive Engagement program. The area of 3400 South College Ave. was closed to the public while police and firefighters responded.
Life and Events covers a wide variety of events happening in the city of Fort Collins this week. Donow starts with music trivia being hosted by the Lyric for February 5th at 8 pm with prizes including tickets to concerts. KCSU’s own event for February 6th will be the first-ever Winterfest. The evening will feature several local artists and be a cozy evening of live music and thrifted clothes.
Weatherwax delivers national news with news coming out of Los Angeles with large protests in the city and on the 101 Freeway. Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in protest of recent ICE activity in the city and nation. This also comes during the largest mass deportation in U.S. history. Many of the protestors carried flags of Mexico alongside other Central American and South American countries.
Also, relating to deportations, the Trump administration has ended the protection of nearly 300,000 Venezuelans in the U.S. who were protected by the Biden administration. Venezuelans living in the U.S. will also have two months before losing the right to work in the country. Talks between the U.S. and Venezuela have begun to return their citizens according to President Donald Trump however, Venezuela has yet to make an announcement. Finally, for national news, Weatherwax covers tariffs between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While originally planning on implementing them much sooner Trump has now paused them for one month. China has also decided to add tariffs on the U.S. starting Monday if the two countries can’t come to terms.

Learn more about the CSU Rams’ loss to the Air Force Falcons in Moby Arena for the women’s basketball team and the triumphant win for the men’s team. Then, for this week, both men’s and women’s basketball teams travel to New Mexico to take on the Lobos. Joining them in New Mexico will be the Ram’s softball team. Finally, for today’s episode, Weatherwax delivers your Fort Collins weather forecast for the week. Fort Collins will see plenty of wind this week but the sun will still shine to help warm things up.
