This week we will meet our Training Directors Lauren and Katie. These two are responsible for all of our new KCSU DJ’s and ensuring that everyone involved in the station knows what to expect being here. They both went through training here before and were inspired to carry the torch and bring in new DJ’s. Hear what their final meal will be on this episode.

Euan Peart
Hey, hi, hello. I’m Euan, the Station Manager here at KCSU. We are Colorado’s biggest student run radio station, and there’s a lot of people to meet around here. So without further ado, I have my wonderful guests.
Lauren Thorpe
I’m Lauren, the Training Director.
Katie Heffernan
And I’m Katie, the Assistant Training Director.
Euan
Yippee.
Lauren
Yippee.
Katie
Yippee.
Euan
That answers my first question now, who are you guys?
Lauren
This answers that.
Euan
Congrats. What exactly do you do as the training directors here at KCSU?
Lauren
We train the upcoming DJs.
Katie
Yeah.
Lauren
So like the new people you hear on air.
Katie
That’s us.
Lauren
That’s the product of our hard work. But we show them, we teach them KCSU rules. We show them how to operate in the studio. We help them build connections.
Katie
Yeah, we just get them started and on the right path to getting their show.
Euan
Beautiful. Why did you two end up at KCSU? Like, tell me your story.
Katie
I always saw the DJ window, and I thought it was really cool, and unfortunately, I didn’t join until the last semester of my junior year. So now I’ve been doing it for about a year and a half. It’s my last semester, I’m a senior ,and I just wanted to get involved. I really like music, and I had always thought it was really cool, and I never had the time, and then I made the time. So I really have enjoyed my time here. And I just, yeah, I just love music.
Euan
Beautiful.
Lauren
Mine is a lot less nice. I really like “Pitch Perfect”. And you know, Becca starts out at the college radio station in the movie. That’s what I thought was cool. And so I was like, when I did my tours here, I was like, Oh my gosh, they have one. I’m gonna be just like, Becca from “Pitch Perfect”. And now here we are, but I’ve loved it, and it turned out to be really good.
Euan
That’s awesome. Yeah. So actually, if you listen back to this podcast from like previous years, it is a lot of who people say that.
Lauren
Do a lot of people say that?
Euan
Yeah. I think Brighid [Bandel, 23-24 Station Manager] ended up because of that.
Lauren
I asked, I asked my trainees that sometimes, because they’re like, How’d you get started? And I say that, and then they’re like, Wait, same I’m like, yeah.
Euan
Yeah.
Katie
Real.
Euan
Well, let’s get to the next question now that we know who you guys are. What is your favorite live event that you’ve attended? This could be a concert. This could be like a basketball game. This could be like a circus show. There’s really any kind of live event.
Katie
When I was 13, I went to Riot Fest. I think this was in 2016 back when they still did Riot Fest in Denver, and they had a rap stage, and I stood there for like, nine hours waiting to see Tyler, The Creator. And I actually saw about four other artists that I didn’t really know too well at the time, but now they’re my absolute favorites. So I just look back on that as like, Wow. I really didn’t even know how good I had it back then.
Euan
Real. That’s awesome.
Lauren
My favorite live event. I haven’t been to any concerts, but I’ve been to like, a lot of like, plays and stuff. And so I was super lucky, and got to go to the premiere of a musical called “Merrily We Roll Along” in New York. And it was just special, because I knew a lot of people involved, and it was the first time I’ve seen it. And it was really just magical, because I gotta see, I gotta know all the work that went into it, and then I gotta see the final project. So it was really nice.
Euan
That’s really cool. I really like the like, difference. I feel like, yeah, kind of shows all the difference in your personality. Like.
Lauren
That’s fair.
Euan
Like both of you, like the two sweetest people I’ve ever met, maybe, and like the best training directors I could have ever, like, dreamed of, but like, the like, difference in like, when you walk in and it’s you two. The trainees must be so confused, but you guys are awesome. This next question, let me prep for it real quick. Okay, next question. This question is a unique question. There’s a timer. You’re gonna get 30 seconds.
Lauren
Oh, okay.
Euan
And once I asked the question, your time will start.
Lauren
So wait, do we get 30 seconds each?
Euan
No, 30 seconds between the two of you.
Katie
Oh, boy.
Lauren
Okay.
Katie
Lock in.
Euan
One mind. so you get 30 seconds. Please name as many horses as you can.
Lauren
What do you mean horses?
Katie
Spirit, Pie-Oh-My from “The Sopranos”. Horses. HORSES. Bojack Horseman from “Bojack Horseman”.
Lauren
What’s the name of that zebra horse from that running movie?
Katie
What’s the zebra from “Madagascar”?
Lauren
Marty?
Katie
No.
Euan
Marty.
Euan
Good job, everyone.
Lauren
I don’t know any horses.
Katie
I carried, lowkey.
Lauren
You Did, No, you did. Yeah.
Euan
When people ask which one of you would be the horse girl, I don’t think many would assume Katie.
Lauren
I thought you meant breeds for a second, and I was like, what do you mean?
Katie
That’s what I was thinking too and then i was like that idea went out the window, I’m not familiar with horses like that.
Lauren
Arabian, Clydesdale. Thats all I got.
Euan
I mean thats two, you could have said those.
Lauren
I could of.
Euan
Both counted. I just started naming, like names. I was like, Jerry, like, it was just like, if they were in a line, I would have made them.
Katie
Famous horses.
Euan
Very different ways to go about there.
Lauren
Yeah.
Euan
I’m gonna put together a leaderboard at the end of the semester.
Lauren
Oh, God.
Katie
Perfect.
Euan
I think, I think, I think that there’s, I think one department is just like, I’m not doing that.
Katie
Training on top.
Lauren
Wait, exactly.
Euan
Training on top! Okay, cool. And then we’ve got our last question, which I think is really fun. It’s a two parter, kind of morbid, but not really. If you were to have your last meal, what, first part, what would you eat for your last meal? And that could be like, one food or like, like a three, five course meal. And then second part is, what entertainment would you have to go with it?
Katie
Ah, the old dinner, and YouTube.
Lauren
Tomato bisque and grilled cheese with like a Dr. Pepper or something. And then, and then show, the first thing that came to my head was “Gossip Girl”.
Speaker 1
Oh, that’s good. I did. I did, like, I don’t even remember what I did, but you can do a lot of things, like, you go to a show, like a live show,
Lauren
Ohhhh.
Euan
Or you could go to Harlem Globetrotters game, me. You could play a video game, like, it’s literally any kind of entertainment. It doesn’t just be a show. It could be, it could be the classic dinner and YouTube even.
Katie
Dinner and YouTube. I think I would have a green chili smothered beef burrito. I would have my grandma’s like sopa de fideo, which is just like noodle soup with a with just a plain Coke. And I think for what I’d watch, honestly, I would watch the entirety of “The Sopranos” solely because it’s like, six seasons long, that’s like, so I would get to live like, just a little bit longer.
Lauren
That’s so fair.
Euan
I like those rules. No, because my favorite that I’ve gotten so far was, Leah from promotions, she was like, I would watch it was like, one of her favorite bands live. And then, you know that, like, sad hamster video she pulls up all the time.
Lauren
Oh my gosh, yeah.
Katie
Yeah, yeah.
Euan
She would get that live to perform.
Lauren
That’s amazing.
Katie
Perfect.
Euan
And then eat like a glass of milk.
Katie
Eat a glass of milk
Euan
I forget what the food was but it was.
Lauren
Amazing
Euan
But it was a really fun question. Well, guys, that’s all my questions for you. I think people know who you are now.
Lauren
I agree.
Katie
Yay.
Euan
Well this has been KCSU’s Beyond the RadioWaves. Tune in next time to meet Tyler, Audrey, and, Gus in news. But for now,
