Coco & Clair Clair bring fun vibes to Denver

Pop duo Coco & Clair Clair took the stage at Cervantes earlier in April. Their captivating, energetic and overall “good ‘lil vibes” made for a fantastic night in Denver.

“Are you feeling sexy tonight?”

This was a popular question throughout the Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom while Coco & Clair Clair performed their new album “Sexy” on the Denver stop of their North American “So Sexy” tour.

This was the pop duo’s first time performing in Colorado, but they performed with such confidence that you would think they visit this venue regularly. The same goes for both opening sets from a Coco & Clair’s live DJ and Grandma. The DJ warmed up the crowd by performing their own music and live vocals. The most memorable aspects were the distortion of the vocals and pulling beats. At one point, the DJ left the stage and joined the audience to dance before returning to the spotlight to perform a cover of “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers.

The DJ was shortly followed by Atlanta artist Grandma accompanied with live guitar and drums. This choice to include live instrumentation allowed for so much energy throughout the performance. The highlight was when Grandma pulled out a trumpet and began playing it live in between singing verses. After Grandma’s set, the crowd was energized and eager to see the headliners of the night.

“Coco noticed a disco ball hanging in the venue and asked if they could turn it on for the next song. That next song ended up being a cover of ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen.'”

When the duo finally took the stage, only screams of the fans could be heard, waiting to see what song Coco & Clair Clair were going to open with. That song was “Bad Lil Vibe,” the second track off the album with fun lyrics about not having a care to give. The synth notes brought a great energy to start the set. As they continued performing album cuts, they switched things up by performing their 2017 single “Crushcrushcrush.” They prefaced the song by asking the audience to raise their hand if they’ve ever had a crush on someone who was ugly, a reference to the songs lyrics.

There were many moments where the duo engaged with the crowd, including singing happy birthday to an audience member, taking selfies with the fans’ phones, and joking that they were breaking up as an April Fools prank. Coco noticed a disco ball hanging in the venue and asked if they could turn it on for the next song. That next song ended up being a cover of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” which the duo took as an opportunity to get the crowd grooving.

“(The duo joked) that they were breaking up as an April Fools prank.”

Another memorable moment was when the duo had the audience sing the chorus to one of their most popular songs, “Pretty,” before the instrumental section of the track kicked in. They remarked that we had some of the best energy they had seen thus far on tour and proceeded to close their set with the album’s other singles, “Cherub” and “Pop Star.”

As Coco & Clair Clair left the stage the audience chanted their names for an encore. The duo returned to the stage and performed two of their older songs, “TLG” and “Sims 2” before officially saying goodbye to Denver. Overall, the concert was a very fun experience. Everyone who performed had high energy and seemed like they were having so much fun. As the duo continue their musical journey, I can’t wait to see them come back to Denver bigger and better with a new set of songs.
