On November 17, 1978, more than 900 people drank cyanide-laced punch on a plot of land in Guyana, South America, called Jonestown. Before this group rose to the level of a cult, they were progressive social advocates who subscribed to a new congregation called The People’s Temple, led by their leader, Jim Jones.
