AC/DC takes the stage at Empower Field at Mile High this week on July 28 as part of their “Pwr Up” tour.
This is the band’s 15th time visiting Denver, with some of their earliest tours in the city dating back to 1978.
We had a chance to go behind the scenes to see the setup of the concert, as well as talk to production manager Will Keating, who has been with AC/DC for 11 years. He gave us a lot of insight into what being a production manager entails, as well as all of the logistics that ensure a smooth experience for concert-goers.
While audiences are focused on the artists and performances right in front of them, Keating is focused on a whole other part of the show.
“What’s going through my head is where my trucks are parked and if the stagehands have turned up, and that we don’t get any weather that stops the show. We also ensure that the artist is happy…and just getting ready to get it all in trucks to move it to the next city, that’s what’s in my head.”
He went on to say that what production does for a show is really a magic of its own, as audiences aren’t meant to see how the show is set up, taken down, and transported. Keating also noted that the artist is the same way, with their focus being on putting on the best performance possible.
But despite all of the things Keating has to focus on logistically, he still loves what he does and the places he gets to go.
“It’s a great energy, and you get to manage a lot of big stuff. You get to work with some of the biggest rock and roll stars in the world, and you get to see them doing their thing. And take a look around, why wouldn’t you?” he said enthusiastically, motioning to the giant stage behind him.
When AC/DC finally takes the stage that Keating and his team have worked so hard to perfect for the show, not only will the band captivate the audience, but so will all of the unseen efforts that create a magical atmosphere for all.
