This week meet our promotions team Ella Perkins and Leah Walton. They are the big names in charge of our Instagram and also in charge of on campus efforts to get more attention to KCSU. Learn about their favorite shows they’ve ever been to as well as a look into the first concert that they have all ever been into. This may leave a question of why Euan is so embarrassed about Imagine Dragons. Finally Leah’s humble dinner and Ella’s massive feast cooked by her mom.

Transcription of episode (provided by Ava Barbieri)
EUAN PEART: Hey, hi, hello. I’m Euan, the station manager here at KCSU. We are Colorado’s biggest student run radio station. There’s a lot of people to meet around here. So without further ado, here are my wonderful guests. And what are your names?
ELLA PERKINS: I’m Ella, I’m the promotions director, Yippee!
LEAH WALTON: And I’m Leah, and I’m the assistant promotions director,
ELLA: Yippeee!
LEAH: And we are the promotions department.
EUAN: So true.
ELLA: Yay!
LEAH: So crazy.
EUAN: What do you guys do as promotions team?
LEAH: We promote the station in a whole bunch of different ways.
ELLA: Yup.
LEAH: Yup. We run the social media.
ELLA: Yup, things like Facebook-
LEAH: Facebook.
ELLA: Maybe a little LinkedIn, MySpace. We need to get the KCSU Tumblr back in.
EUAN: It’s true, We do.
ELLA: I’m trying to think of other weird social media platforms that aren’t really… we got Vine!
LEAH: Where’s the KCSU BeReal, is what I’m saying.
EUAN: Oh my gosh, that would actually go crazy. As a non user.
ELLA: Also as a non user.
LEAH: Oh, I’m a user.
EUAN: “I’m a user.”
LEAH: KCSU Twitter.
ELLA: Yes.
EUAN: Follow KCSU on Twitter, at KCSUFM.
LEAH: Yes. So we promote the station through social media. We also do things like giveaway. We giveaways. We work with local venues like the Aggie, like Washington’s, yeah. And we, you ever listen to the radio and you hear those free ticket giveaway things?
ELLA: That’s us.
LEAH: That’s us. We do that.
EUAN: Whoa.
LEAH: We do that. Whoa.
ELLA: And we make we make posters, and we make graphics, and-
LEAH: I write a newsletter.
ELLA: She writes a newsletter every week. I create graphics.
EUAN: Theres like a million things that Promo does here at KCSU.
LEAH: Definitely like one of the more creative jobs.
ELLA: Oh 100%.
LEAH: Oh, it’s really awesome. I’ve gotten better at Photoshop with this job than any class I’ve ever had to take.
ELLA: Yippee!
EUAN: Well, We’ll move on to our next question, which is, how did you all end up at KCSU?
ELLA: So my parents wanted me to join something like, “You should join the radio station. Maybe you’ll find someone there.” I’m like, “Well, I’ll join for the music.” So I joined the radio station my freshman year, and I’ve kind of just been chilling here, and now I work here.
EUAN: Yeah, you used to table a lot, right?
ELLA: Yeah, I tabled every time we tabled, every single time that we tabled for the past two years.
EUAN: Whoa.
ELLA: Yeah, yes.
EUAN: How did you end up here, Leah?
LEAH: I switched my major to journalism, and I knew that I wanted to be in student media. I actually originally tried to, I did, like, Collegian training, but I actually, like, really hated news writing a lot, really hate it. And so I reached, I, you know, applied for KCSU DJ, did the training, had a show here. Really loved it, because I just- music’s awesome. I love music, and I just wanted to stay here and and work here, and it’s amazing.
EUAN: Absolutely wonderful.
LEAH: Absolutely wonderful.
EUAN: Following that up, we would like to ask you, what are some of your favorite live events that y’all have attended, it doesn’t just have to be music. It’d be like a sports game. It could be like the Harlom Globe trotters. It could be like a car show, something, whatever, could also be music.
ELLA: I mean, I always really enjoy the concerts that I go to. I saw The National, and The National is always fantastic in concert, and they can never put on a bad show. And I love them. But I also saw Goth Babe, and he’s probably one of my favorite people to go see live, because he it just feels like a big party instead of an actual concert. So it’s pretty nice.
EUAN: Super duper.
LEAH: Yes, I’m also a regular concert goer, love shows so fun. Probably my favorite, I’ve seen Wednesday, twice. They’re so amazing.
ELLA: I’ve always wanted to see Wednesday.
LEAH: I love Wednesday, I’m a huge, huge, huge fan of them. And, like, I don’t know, like, who else is putting distortion on a lap steel these days? We need more of that. That was the really amazing. Big Thief was at Red Rocks.
ELLA: You saw Big Thief?
LEAH: Yes.
ELLA: I’m so jealous.
LEAH: It was like, I think amazing, that was, like, my Era’s tour, you know, like, I don’t know, you know, have you seen that video of like, people like that girl, like, crying over a Taylor Swift song.
ELLA: Oh yeah.
LEAH: Like on the era’s tour?
ELLA: And her friends are like, next to her.
LEAH: Yeah.
ELLA: She’s just going like crazy.
LEAH: Yeah. That was me a Big Thief, that was an amazing, amazing show at Red Rocks.
EUAN: That’s beautiful.
LEAH: Yes.
ELLA: What about you? What’s your favorite event?
EUAN: I’ve actually done this podcast already, but my, so I’m everyone already knows. Actually, I think I did say the Harlem Globetrotters. When I was a kid.
LEAH: You saw the Harlem Globetrotters?
EUAN: Yeah, man, they’re like, easiestly-
ELLA: I saw the Blue Man Group.
LEAH: Whoa.
EUAN: Whoa, that’s cool.
ELLA: I was in Chicago. I was also really little, and I wanted to be blue.
EUAN: Why aren’t you blue?
LEAH: Wait, first. Sorry if this is off topic, first concert you were, ever went to?
ELLA: First concert I ever went to, Big Time Rush.
LEAH: Yes! Amazing!
ELLA: When their show was still going, and I was obsessed with their show, and this was their first ever tour. They went to Wolf Trap in DC, and I went there for my seventh or eighth birthday. My mom was not having fun. I was having a blast.
EUAN: Super fun. How about you, Leah?
LEAH: I’m embarrassed of mine.
EUAN: I’m also embarrassed of mine, so.
ELLA: I think you’ve told me yours before.
EUAN: Yeah, everyone knows.
LEAH: What is it, wait.
EUAN: No, you go, and then-
LEAH: I can’t remember.
EUAN: Do we want to talk about my actual first concert, or the one that I went to for me first concert, because I went to a few concert like with my parents when I was a kid. But it wasn’t like my first concert per say.
LEAH: Yeah, Yeah I can’t remember if yours is more or less embarrassing than mine.
EUAN: Mine is more for sure.
LEAH: My first one was Panic! at the Disco.
ELLA: Wait, I also saw them in concert.
LEAH: Yeah, that was my first concert ever, though, like, I was 14, in 2016 and it was at the Pepsi Center when it was called that. I think it’s called something different. Now I don’t know.
EUAN: Ball Arena.
LEAH: Ball Arena, yep.
EUAN: Yeah, my first show is also at Ball Arena. At the time Pepsi Center, and I saw the Imagine Dragons.
LEAH: Yeah, that’s right. You told me this before.
ELLA: Wait, that would be such a fun first concert though.
EUAN: You know what? Yeah.
ELLA: I feel like in that era was all of their like, like “Radioactive”.
EUAN: It was two albums after the “Radioactive”, it was, like, their third album. And it-
LEAH: Amazing.
EUAN: Was, you know what? For like, 14 year old kid, it was a good time. for me, now I’m like, oh my god, I run a radio station, and everyone knows.
LEAH: I mean, it’s funny and like, I don’t know, it could be worse.
ELLA: Yeah.
LEAH: It actually could be. Well, actually?
EUAN: Well?
LEAH: Could it?
EUAN: I’ll also say, like, as a kid, the first, like, actual concert I went to, I went, my parents took me and my brother with them to see Leonard Cohen at the red at Red Rocks, and I was like, four or five or something, and I was sleepy, so I slept under the seat while Leonard was sinigng.
ELLA: I think, like my mom, I think I was dragged to, like, Phillip Phillips,
EUAN: Cool. Philip Philips was awesome. He’s got that one song.
LEAH: He’s got that, I literally cannot tell you a single Philip Philips song.
ELLA: That one song.
EUAN: It’s in Spiderman, what’s it called?
LEAH: Literally what.
EUAN: Philip Philips.
ELLA: My parents took me to a Leon Bridges concert.
EUAN: What?
ELLA: And my brother and I fell asleep.
EUAN: You what?
ELLA: I was really young. I was small.
EUAN: I don’t care.
ELLA: But I would love to go see Leon Bridges again.
EUAN: I don’t care.
LEAH: I don’t give a dang.
EUAN: That is messed up.
ELLA: I mean, I remember some of the concert, but we were also we had grass seats, so we had like a picnic blanket out and everything. There was a big pillar in our way. We’re like, well, what can we do.
EUAN: Listen, enjoy.
ELLA: Yep, that’s what I did and then I fell asleep.
EUAN: Stay, and wonder and beauty of the world.
ELLA: Yep, cause it’s Leon Bridges.
EUAN: But no one falls asleep.
LEAH: Yes. Sorry. We went up, we went off topic.
EUAN: Me getting mad for sleeping at Leon Bridges like I didn’t sleep at Leonard Cohen.
ELLA: My brother slept through a National Concert.
EUAN: Well-
ELLA: I was like, dude, and he was playing, he was playing “Mr. November”, where he screams during that song, and he screams the lyrics, and my brother’s just out, and I’m like, how, how is this possible.
LEAH: That’s how it feels.
EUAN: You know, I do be sleeping.
LEAH: I be sleeping. I be sleeping.
EUAN: Like-
LEAH: Yeah, I I’ve never seen Scott Pilgrim-, what is it called?
EIAN: Scott Pilgrim.
LEAH: That one, that movie-
ELLA: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World?
LEAH: Never seen it all the way through, I always fall asleep.
ELLA: Thats blasphemy.
EUAN: That’s kinda awesome.
LEAH: Literally four different times I’m trying to watch like all of it.
ELLA: That is one of my favorite movies.
LEAH: I know it’s every- it’s like a lot of people’s favorite movie.
ELLA: So good. It’s the most accurate comic book adaptation. It’s so good.
LEAH: And I always fall asleep.
EUAN: You know, I get it, though.
ELLA: The music’s so good.
EUAN: The music is good. I think movies with good soundtracks always end up with, like, it sounds like a lullaby. When you’re like, a little bit sleepy, you’re like, Well, if I sleep now-
ELLA: Yeah.
EUAN: Let’s get back into the question.
LEAH: Sorry.
EUAN: Back to the question.
LEAH: We just love to yap.
EUAN: This is, this is kind of a, this is an intense question. This one, please prepare yourself. Once I asked the question, you have 30 seconds to answer the question.
ELLA: I’m holding onto my chair.
LEAH: Like each? Do we have to go at the same time, like each?
EUAN: Yeah, it’s a team. It’s a team answer, you are a team, and you have 30 seconds.
ELLA: Okay, I’m gonna transmit my brain into yours.
LEAH: We can, we can read each other’s mind.
ELLA: Yeah.
EUAN: Name as many horses as you can. Go.
ELLA: Uh-What?
LEAH: Oh My God.
ELLA: Like breeds?
LEAH: Theres actually a timer.
ELLA: Uh, brown horse, spotted horse-
LEAH: Yea, brown horse.
ELLA: There’s the miniature horses.
LEAH: Paint horses. What, what, what’s a mare? People are like-
ELLA: I don’t know man.
EUAN: My count is five.
ELLA: There’s a horse that you can braid its hair, there’s there’s-
LEAH: Okay, red horse, orange horse, yellow horse, green horse, blue horse.
EUAN: And that’s time.
ELLA: I think we did pretty well.
LEAH: I think we did really good.
EUAN: We’ll have to count the stats at the end of the year, and what I deem is a valid horse on this score, because we had recent episodes, someone said giraffe.
ELLA: Oh we should have said, we should have said unicorn. Unicorn, Pegasus.
LEAH: That’s a different thing.
EUAN: I count unicorn as a horse. That’s just a horse with a point.
LEAH: Girraffe is crazy. I remember, like, outside of the podcast, there’s an argument about that.
ELLA: Oh yeah, and I have a giraffe tattoo.
EUAN: Inside the podcast though.
LEAH: It was Adam [assistant podcast director at KCSU]. Wait, was it Adam?
ELLA: Yeah.
LEAH: Adam was like, guys went to me and Sasha was like, is it giraffe a horse, and me and Sasha were like, No.
ELLA: I believe that it is.
EUAN: I’m team no.
ELLA: I’m team different.
LEAH: Sometimes things are different.
EUAN: All right, let’s fight right now.
ELLA: Oh, God.
LEAH: But we should get into a giant screaming fight right now.
ELLA: Giraffes or horses?!
EUAN: No- Well, we’ve got one more question for you guys. It’s a little somber. And the question is, number one, what will be your last meal? This could be like one food that you eat or like, if it was your last meal, you could do, like three courses that you would be like, I do this first and this first and this next. You can take a second to think we can edit it out.
ELLA: This kind of reminds me of when Good Mythical Morning does, like their last meals.
EUAN: That’s what I took it from, exactly what I took it from. And then also separately, what entertainment would you have with your last meal? Because some people might go fish spinning to “Funky Town”, and some people might go actual live basketball game.
LEAH: Fish spinning to “Funky Town”?
EUAN: Yeah, have you never seen that?
ELLA: Yeah. Have you not seen that? It’s a fish spinning.
EUAN: It’s a fish spinning
LEAH: Oh yea, the fish spinning.
EUAN: You’ve seen that.
ELLA: You take me to. Funky Town!
EUAN: I’ve played fish spinning to “Funky Town”.
LEAH: Actually, actually, that’s so true.
ELLA: I feel like for you, it’d be the hamster with the sad violin.
EUAN: You would like that.
LEAH: The ten hour version.
ELLA: Because we were crying over that the other day.
LEAH: Literally cry, like Euan was having a serious, like professional conversation with someone, and I was-
EUAN: I’m always having one of those.
LEAH: You’re always having one of those.
ELLA: We were both watching those videos.
LEAH: And I was watching it, and I was trying to get your attention a little bit, likewhen is Euan gonna notice me like blasting 10 hour version of sad hamster playing sad violin.
EUAN: I genuinely think once they left, you’re like, how did you not notice this?
LEAH: No literally.
EUAN: Like look at my computer.
LEAH: Look at my computer.
ELLA: Adam, play the craziest clip of Chowder that you can find.
EUAN: Is that what your show would be? Would you want to do sh- Chowder?
ELLA: No, I think I’d do Courage the Cowardly Dog, or Batman Beyond.
EUAN: Oh, that’s good.
ELLA: Or Samurai Jack, actually, Samurai Jack.
EUAN: You could just do like a three course meal, and then for each one, you do a different show.
ELLA: Oooooh.
EUAN: So one more time, what would be your final meal?
ELLA: Oh, right!
LEAH: Okay, last meal ever. Let’s see, I would like, for some reason, all I can think of is crepes. I love crepes. I’m gonna have some crepes with honey and a glass of milk.
ELLA: Wait, what do you mean a glass of milk?
EUAN: I’m trying not to laugh.
LEAH: I’m a milk drinker. I’m pro milk.
EUAN: That’s fair.
LEAH: It’s good for your bones.
EUAN: I grew up on soy milk, and I’ve never broken a bone.
ELLA: I’m lactose intolerant. Yeah.
LEAH: I’m so not, I’m so, like, intolerant of any of everything else, but not lactose. I’m, I’m lactose tolerant.
EUAN: That’s beautiful.
LEAH: I’m very tolerant of lactose.
ELLA: See, I’d still like eat stuff that has lactose in it. I’ll just deal with the consequences later, because it tastes yummy.
EUAN: See, I’m lactose tolerant, and I don’t eat lactose except for it’s when it’s cheese.
LEAH: Cheese is awesome.
EUAN: I love cheese, but milk, I don’t do, I don’t like milk.
ELLA: I like milk when it’s in stuff.
EUAN: I like, like a regular latte. I don’t get, like, soy milk in my lattes. Actually, sometimes I do.
LEAH: Yeah, I make, I make you regular iced mocha.
EUAN: Yeah, and I’m fine with that. Yeah, that’s not a problem. But, like, when it’s in a bowl of cereal, boo!
LEAH: Okay, weirdo, soy milk is crazy though.
EUAN: Anyway.
ELLA: My last meal, my mom’s gonna hate me for this, because that means she’sgonna have to cook all of it. My mom’s lasagna, my mom’s carrot soufflé. My mom’s, that carrot soufflé is so good, and I’m so excited to have it over the break. My mom’s meatloaf that she makes in cupcake tins, and make them look like cupcakes and put mashed potatoes on top of it like icing. A nice chicken pot pie. God, my mom, she’s gonna be like, I’m not making you all of that.
LEAH: I’m not doing that.
EUAN: For your last meal?
ELLA: My mom’s chili, and a nice like, a big pot of my baby mix that I make.
EUAN: Not the baby mix.
ELLA: It’s Cheerios, plain Cheerios with rainbow goldfish, and you put in a big pot, and then you shake it up, and it gets all yummy. What else? A big, a really big pumpkin pie with a lot of whipped cream on it. And-
EUAN: We’re gonna have to call it at the pumpkin pie.
ELLA: What? And water.
EUAN: You have like nine meals, Water? Your last beverage would be a water? Hold up. That’s so much worse than milk.
ELLA: Stay hydrated.
EUAN: Well yes, I encourage all people to stay hydrated.
ELLA: Or maybe-
LEAH: Yeah, but you’re gonna die.
ELLA: Ooh, Shirley Temple.
EUAN: Yeah, there you go. That’s correct.
ELLA: Extra cherries.
EUAN: Yeah, that’s the actual correct answer. I think that’s what I said, actually. Leah, do you have a anything else you’d like to add to your last meal?
LEAH: No, I know. I want crepes and I want milk. That’s it.
EUAN: That’s beautiful. And with your crepes and milk, crepes and milk you would watch the sad mouse. Or, do you have anything else?
LEAH: 10 hours, 10 hours.
EUAN: You could have a live concert, or like someone play for you, like any kind of live activity
LEAH: A live sad hamster playing. No, yeah, no, that is my answer, actually.
EUAN: A live sad hamster, or live, or sad hamster YouTube video.
ELLA: What would be in your crepe?
LEAH: Honey and sugar, sorry.
EUAN: You could do Wednesday and a live sad hamster.
LEAH: Actually yeah, that, yeah? When? Wednesday, sad hamster collab.
EUAN: When?
LEAH: When, literally, when, Super Bowl, Super Bowl, 2030. Wednesday and the Sad Hamster.
ELLA: That would be so fun.
EUAN: Thats beautiful. alright, Oh Ella, sorry. Whoa, which, which would you have with your like, 800 foods.
ELLA: Honestly, probably Samurai Jack. I grew up watching Samurai Jack.
EUAN: Would you binge the whole thing or, like-
ELLA: Thats what I’m doing right now.
EUAN: Oh, cool.
ELLA: Yeah. I watched it all the time with my dad and brother.
EUAN: I’ve never seen Samurai Jack.
ELLA: Really?
EUAN: Yeah.
LEAH: Me neither.
ELLA: Or an exclusive screening of a really nice animated Hellboy series by Mike Manola, who is the original creator and artist of it, and I would love to see an animated series of Hellboy instead of just all live action.
EUAN: That would be wonderful.
ELLA: Yep.
EUAN: Well, guys, that was my last question.
LEAH: Oh, really?
EUAN: Yeah, that’s all I have.
ELLA: That’s insane.
LEAH: We, by far the longest episode.
LEAH: Yeah. We got so much to say.
EUAN: Do you have anything to pitch, anything to be like, listen to my show?
LEAH: Follow us on Instagram.
ELLA: Yeah.
EUAN: What is our, what’s @?
LEAH: @ KCSUFM. There’s we really cool stuff on there.
EUAN: TikTok
LEAH: TikTok.
ELLA: Yep, we’re making more TikTok content.
EUAN: Youtube Reels.
LEAH: Youtube Reels. We’re gonna make, oh, we’re gonna make more of those, like little What are you listening to videos.
ELLA: Yeah.
LEAH: That will be really fun.
EUAN: Yeah, pop around campus. You might see us.
LEAH: Yeah, you might see us. Listen to the things that you want us-
EUAN: Listen to things you think would be cool.
LEAH: Listen, when you’re on campus, listen to the music that you actually, don’t listen to embarrassing things is what I’m saying.
ELLA: Or listening, listen to really weird, embarrassing things.
LEAH: Yeah?
ELLA: Like, well, a guy farting into the mic for like 2 hours.
LEAH: Yeah? And, wow, that’s what an Ella is, Ella’s against you, and that’s why she’s saying that. But I am rooting for you, and I’m telling you, don’t listen to anything embarrassing, because what if you’re pulled aside and you’re asked, like, what do you listen to?
ELLA: See, I’ve always had that fear of playing something really embarrassing and then being asked, like, what I’m listening to. I’m like, Uh, uh, I have to, like, changing my mind, but honestly, at this point, I’m gonna play something really embarrassing, and if you pull me aside you gotta listen to it.
EUAN: See, I just always listen to Imagine Dragons. So I’m always living in fear.
LEAH: Euan loves Imagine Dragons.
ELLA: That’s bro’s favorite band.
EUAN: Anyway, do either of you have a show currently?
ELLA: I do. My show is called The Wooden Monkeys Music Corner. It’s from 5pm to 7pm on Sundays. I talk about lots of fun stuff. I’m gonna be talking about F1 my, on Sunday, because that is the Austin, Texas Grand Prix, and I’m very excited about it.
EUAN: This has been KCSU’s Beyond The Radio Waves. Thank you so much for listening. Tune in next time to meet Katie and Lauren in training. But for now this have been-
ELLA: Leah and Ella, Promotions Director. Bye Everybody.
EUAN: Thanks for coming on, I’ll see you on the flip.
