Last Friday night, February 28, the Velveteers took the stage at Aggie Theater once again, but this time they had some new songs to share. The Colorado-native band played the same theater back in 2022 and released their sophomore album, A Million Knives, on Valentine’s Day this year. The album features 13 new songs including recently released singles, “On and On” and “Suck the Cherry”, which were released in November and December when the band began teasing their new album.
After having toured with bands like Greta Van Fleet and the Black Keys, the Velveteers are heading on their tour around the western United States.
The band comprises lead singer/guitarist Demi Demitro, drummer Baby Pottersmith, and drummer Jonny Figg. The trio was discovered online by Black Keys member Dan Auerbach in 2020 who signed the band to the record label he produces, Easy Eye Sound. The Velveteers released their first album, Nightmare Daydream, in November 2020 after recording in Nashville, Tennessee.
Before the Velveteers performed, two bands from Fort Collins opened the show. Psych-rock band, The Crooked Rugs, played first with fresh rock sounds that livened up the theater. The band is made up of five friends who met while attending Colorado State University just a mile away from Aggie Theater.
After hearing from The Crooked Rugs, Fort Collins band B****flower played second. Their unique psych-punk and grunge sound brought a powerful energy to the audience.
The Velveteers started their set off with “All These Little Things”, the first song off their new album, and continued to play their new songs along with older tunes from their first album. During the show, the band had their friend, Chester Rhodes, painting on a giant square canvas with purple, pink, white, and blue colors. Mid-way through the show, Demi Demitro, announced that the painting was going to be up for auction at the merchandise booth at the end of the show.

As Demi began to play the intro to “A Million Knives”, Baby stood up on top of the bass drum and held up their phone, instructing the audience to put their phone flashlights up for the slow, heartbroken tune. The room illuminated as people slowly began to put their flashlights up and began swaying to the song.
The road-bound band ended the show with an encore featuring many songs from their first album, including their powerful drum-heavy song, “Dark Horse”. The Velveteers packed Aggie Theater, almost selling out the show and continuing their tour starting in Salt Lake City, Utah, the next day. The band started their tour in FoCo and will close their tour in Denver on April 25th.
