A Border War classic between Colorado State and Wyoming turned out to be an unforgettable game. Unfortunately for the Rams it will be a haunting reminder of what could have been.
You would think an 11 point lead with 71 seconds left in the second half would suffice for a victory. For the Rams it did not. Instead it led to a 79-76 final in a fourth-consecutive road loss for Colorado State.
“Everything conceivable that could’ve went wrong, went wrong.” coach Niko Medved said.
The Rams struggled at the line in an attempt to ice the game with Wyoming trying to extend it. Shooting a measly 1-of-3 in the final moments of regulation.
“If we make another free throw, game’s over, if we get a rebound on a missed free throw, the games over,” Medved said.
The Rams were holding on to a two-point lead with Wyoming’s graduate forward Mason Walters at the line with just more than two seconds remaining. The missed free throw attempt bounced off the hands of several CSU players before sailing out of bounds. The Cowboys would get the ball under their basket with 1.8 seconds remaining, Walters took the inbound and tied the game as the buzzer sounded.
Colorado State would lead by as many as four in overtime, but still failed to finish it off.
Colorado State guard Isaiah Stevens had two points in the first half shooting 1-of-6 from the field with six assists. Stevens got started converting shots from the field in the second half scoring 14 points with six of those points coming from downtown.
During overtime Stevens could not buy a bucket with his lone point coming from the free throw line.
One refreshing sight for Rams fans would be the return of a solid Patrick Cartier performance.
After scoring just 15 points in his last three games on 4-of-16 shooting, Cartier led the way for the Rams offense with 13 in the first half, while adding another six in the final 25 minutes. Still it wasn’t enough to give the Rams the edge.
After another slow start to a road contest the Rams finished the first half strong cutting the Cowboy lead down to just three heading into the locker rooms. They followed it up with a strong second half that gave them a great opportunity to seal the win.
“I thought we played terrific in the second half and the end of the first half,” Medved said.
For Medved’s group, they sit 15-5 (3-4 in the Mountain West) with 11 games remaining until the conference tournament in March.
.
“These seasons are long, they keep coming at you. You have unbelievable ups and downs. This is obviously a brutal blow for us,”
For a team that was ranked as high as No. 13 in the country, a quad-three loss will definitely bounce them from the Associated Press Top 25 again.
“As a team right now, we have a choice, either splinter and go away from each other, or come closer together,” Cartier said.
The Rams return home early next week coming off two straight losses on the road. The schedule doesn’t get any easier though as they will play host to the national champion runner-up San Diego State on Tuesday before hitting the road again to take on Fresno State on February 3rd.
